Let’s Talk About Hand Soap!

Today lets talk about hand soap. We all use it daily, and so having a healthy option is a MUST in my opinion. I started making my own foaming hand soap pretty early in my switch to a more natural lifestyle. With concerns over ingredients in many hand soaps, and the fact that I hated spending so much on hand soap it was a no brainier to start making my own.

I have tried many “natural” hand soap options, and while they worked great, the cost was the one sticking point for me. Thankfully, I discovered a natural and incredibly simple option that I can make at home that works just as well. Plus it doesn’t cost $4 a bottle like the “natural” hand soap versions at the store.

The recipe itself is literally so simple that I sometimes kick myself for ever buying hand soap at the store. I keep the few simple ingredients on hand and we never have to buy hand soap or worry about running out.

Before you begin, you’ll need a foaming hand soap container. I originally used foaming hand soap containers that I had on hand from soap I had bought. They worked great for a month or so and then they started to gunk up for some reason and stick.

I now use  THESE and am very happy…so is my husband….sticking hand soap pumps were driving him CRAZY!

Once you’ve gotten a foaming dispenser of some kind… here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • Water (distilled or boiled is best but not needed if it will be used within a few weeks). Personally I never used distilled or boiled water.
  • 2-3 Tablespoons Liquid Castile Soap (I get mine in bulk HERE))
  • 15 drops of Essential oils of choice for scent (I use lavender and tea tree on the regular. I would avoid citrus oils unless you have a glass foaming dispenser)

Instructions

1. Fill the soap dispenser with water to about 1 inch of the top. This leaves room for the foam pump and soap to be added.
2. Add 2-3 tablespoons of liquid castile soap to the water (NOTE: You do not want to add the soap fist or it will form up when you add the water.)
3. Add 15 drops of your essential oil of choice.
4. Screw pump on and swish around to mix.
5. Use as you would any regular foaming soap.

*NOTE: Once you get the hang of this you won’t have to measure. You could also add more castile soap (about 1/4 cup or more) and make a face wash or body wash.  To fill 3 of these every week takes me about 5 mins or less!
